EXCLUSIVE: 'Cedar Cove' EP Dan Wigutow Talks Series Cancellation And More
To say fans of the Hallmark Channel series Cedar Cove were outraged and disappointed when the series was cancelled after three seasons is an understatement.
Once news leaked out initially by several cast members and then from a cryptic statement by the Hallmark Channel on its official Facebook page, fans joined forces to start Save Cedar Cove Facebook pages and even started a petition to save the series, which at last count had over 1500 signatures.
Before we go any further, it must be noted that Cedar Cove is indeed officially cancelled. Pop Culture Principle reached out to the American Executive Producer of Cedar Cove, Dan Wigutow, to get more information on the cancellation, as well as what is in store for the beloved series.
Wigutow has been an executive producer on Cedar Cove for all three seasons of the series. He’s worked alongside other executive producers Ron French, Stephen Harmaty, and showrunner Sue Tenney.
The cancellation of the series came as a surprise to him as well, “Since Cedar Cove has been a successful series with such a supportive audience. We are all, of course, very disappointed that the decision was made by Hallmark to not go ahead with a fourth season.”
Cedar Cove was the number one drama in Live + 3 ratings in its time slot on several occasions and that led Wigutow and the rest of the cast and crew to believe the series would be renewed. “Because of the positive reaction of the audience to the series, we had high hopes that we would be back for a fourth season. Unfortunately, that was not the case.”
Wigutow and the rest of the folks behind the series are aware of the fans’ anger about the show’s cancellation. “We understand the frustration of fans at being left 'hanging' with the way things concluded in season 3.” He went on to say, “Based on the cliffhanger in the season 3 finale, you can tell we had no indication that this would be the last season of Cedar Cove and that would be the final episode.”
What would the fourth season of Cedar Cove look like if the series had come back? Wigutow had some thoughts, “It had always been our intention to bring all the characters back together the way they are in Debbie Macomber’s books for the final season.”
With shows like Longmire that were cancelled and picked up by another network, fans are hoping that will be the same situation with Cedar Cove. As for that possibility and the future of the series, Wigutow and the rest of the Cedar Cove producers seem to have left the door open, if only a little bit. “While we have no specific plans for the future, it is our hope, with the support of our fans, that there may be some way to continue and at least try to resolve the cliffhanger in the season 3 finale in order to give our principal characters a proper ending.”
We will keep you posted on any further developments as they happen.
