John Kenneth Muir talks Music on Film: Purple Rain

Who would have thought back in 1984, a little low-budget film starring an artist that most of the general public didn't know about, would become a cult classic. Not only the film, but its fantastic soundtrack. Well, Purple Rain did just that. Regarded as one of the best rock films ever made, Purple Rain would go on to redefine the genre and make Prince a pop superstar. Award winning author John Kenneth Muir takes a look at the phenomenon that was and still is associated with the film. Through interviews with several members of the film crew and other people with insights to the film, Music on Film: Purple Rain will discuss various issues with the project, from the beginning to the release of the film. We sit down with John and take a deep look at the inner workings of this cult classic. You can buy the book through John's official page or via Amazon. Links are posted below! The Loving Story - Nancy Buirski interview

Sometimes as a writer and reviewer, you get the chance to watch something that truly touches you. Something that makes you sit down and really take a look at what is going on in the world..makes you sit down and think. Many television shows and movies that are released today don't fit that bill. They are obviously there for our entertainment, but every once in a while it's nice to watch something that is not only incredibly good, but can evoke real emotions when you are watching it. One such project is a documentary called The Loving Story.

For those who don't know, The Loving Story is about Richard and Mildred Lovely. An interracial couple who were married in 1958 in the state of Virginia. At that time, interracial or miscegenation relationships were not allowed in many of the states. The couple went to Washington, DC to get married where it was legal. Once they returned to Virginia, they were arrested for violating the state's Racial Integrity Act. They were both sentenced to a year in jail, but the judge would suspend the sentence if the couple agreed to leave the state of Virginia for 25 years.  We know the story doesn't end their obviously..the documentary takes us from the early beginnings of their case when they decided to go to the Supreme Court, to their ultimate victory in 1967. That is when the Virginia law was overturned, both Richard and Mildred were allowed to go back home.

In steps filmmaker Nancy Buirski. She found about the story of the Lovings when she read Mildred's obituary in 2008. She decided that the story needed to be told and I couldn't have agreed more. The documentary is an astounding piece of work. Not only with the pacing and direction from Buirski, but the treasure trove of  archival footage that was shot by Hope Ryden and the incredible photos by photographer Grey Villet give you a very close and personal portrait of the couple. The film goes to show you that people can truly make a difference. Richard and Mildred didn't set out to change the world, they just wanted to stay together as a married couple. Their story is one of courage, determination and ultimate victory. It's a film that everyone should see regardless of race, gender or age. It shows you never to take anything for granted.

As Nancy said to me, one person doesn't make a film and she is totally correct. Many people were involved in this project and I'd like to acknowledge some of them:

Elisabeth Haviland James - producer and editor

Susie Ruth Powell - writer

Marshall Sonenshine - executive producer

Scott Berrie - executive producer

Patricia Romeu - co-producer

This group has put together an amazing film about a very important case in our country's history. A documentary that will make you think about how quickly something can be taken from you and how if you truly believe in something, you should fight for it no matter the odds.

John Kenneth Muir speaks to The PC Principle!

It's not often that a fan has the chance to speak to someone whose work you admire, but I have had the pleasure over the past several years to speak with author John Kenneth Muir. I first spoke to John when I contacted him for an interview about the television series Millennium. After that first encounter, we've had John back several times to discuss the series. John also has written numerous books on the science fiction and horror genre. John is not only and award winning writer, but he also created a web series called The House Between. The interview today is about the third book in a series called Horror Films of the 1990s.  714 pages of reviews and discussions of over 300 films from the 1990s. It's a wealth of information and a book that all true horror fans need to have in their collection. In the interview, we discuss the horror genre in general, society's affect on horror and I pick out several films that we take a closer look at. If you are interested in knowing more about John and his work after you listen to the interview, here are a few places to check out his work: To order the book Horror Films of the 1990s, you can go to his publisher's website McFarland by clicking here or call an order the book at (800)253-2187. You can also visit John's official page here. And finally, John has a blog were he reviews and discusses current and past horror and science fiction TV shows and movies. Brimstone - An interview with series creators Ethan Reiff & Cyrus Voris

Every once and a while a show will come along that before I even see the show, I am excited about it from what I have read in the entertainment magazines. One of those show is Brimstone. Brimstone was created by Ethan Reiff and Cyrus Voris. The pilot of the episode aired in 1998 and the series only lasted 13 episodes before it was shutdown during production of the 14th episode. As I said before, I was hooked before I even saw the pilot episode. Here is a synopsis of what the show is about:   When the show was cancelled in 1999, I joined a group of fans who started a campaign to get FOX to rethink the cacelling of the show. Although we didn't get new epis0des of the show created, we did convince the SciFi channel to pick up and air the original 13 episodes. In our eyes, that was still a win! Fast forward several years later and I had the great honor of speaking with the creators of Brimstone, Ethan Reiff and Cyrus Voris. We spend well over an hour talking about this fabulous show and after the interview, you will see that the show holds a special place for both of them. I am hoping one day the series will end up on DVD, fingers crossed! Until then, please enjoy my conversation with Ethan and Cyrus!

Sunshine - Movie Audio Commentary

Welcome to the first post of my new project The PC Principle! This blog will cover all aspects of pop culture, music, movies, television and technology. If it's pop culture related, I will talk about it here! For the first post of the blog, I wanted to bring everyone's attention to a film that was overlooked and I considered that a crime. Sunshine was released in 2007. It was directed by the fantastic Danny Boyle and had an amazing cast which included Chris Evans. Now like you, I had my concerns about this type of film and Chris Evans being part of it, but boy was I completely surprised. He gives probably the best performance in the film. The basic plot of the film is that the Sun is dying and the Earth is in a deep freeze. Our cast is asked to try and reignite the Sun by taking a payload on a ship and shoot a bomb into the heart of the Sun which scientists believe will reignite the Sun. Now, without giving the movie away, let's just say they run in the some issues as far as the crew goes and with a failed attempt before they tried. The film is gripping, suspenseful and just a thrill to watch. I recently was a guest on a William Johnson's podcast called the Paxton Configuration. We both watched the film and did audio commentary for the film. Here you will be able to listen to our commentary, so go rent the film and play our commentary along with the movie like an extra special feature on the DVD! We tell you in the commentary where exactly to start the movie to be in sync with our commentary. So, sit back and enjoy!
