Interview: Ben Youcef

ben2

Ben Youcef is definitely starting to make a name for himself in Hollywood. The Algerian born actor broke onto the scene in Steven Spielberg’s Munich. His performance in Munich landed him roles in films such as Bruno, The Bourne Ultimatum and Body of Lies. Ben has also had memorable performances in hit television series such at NCIS: Los Angeles, CSI: NY and Law & Order.

Currently the multi-talented actor can be seen starring alongside Academy Award nominee Taraji P. Henson in the inspirational film From The Rough. He is also writing, producing and starring in the independent film The Algerian.

Ben was kind enough to sit down with us to discuss his current projects, being a first time producer and why having mentors is important.

Pop Culture Principle – What was it about the script for From The Rough that made you want to be a part of the project?

Ben Youcef – It’s a true and inspirational story about the first African American female golf coach. It’s about this wonderful woman who recruited these kids who had baggage and many problems in life. She was a tough coach and a mother at the same time, but was able to find a balance between the two. She helped guide us and helped us find our purpose in life. For my character in particular, she helped him find his inner peace. It’s such a beautiful story. In the past I’ve done a lot of roles that dealt with terrorism, so it was refreshing to do something much more inspirational and also a film with a great message. I’m not representing my people in a bad light, so that was a great motivator for me.

USA Network Releases Trailers For 'Satisfaction', 'Rush', 'Complications'

RUSH examines the world of renegade physician Dr. William Rush (Tom Ellis, “Miranda”), a “medical fixer” who privately caters to LA’s elite and whose service comes with a hefty price tag. Though the hard-partying doctor claims that he doesn’t make judgments about his less-than-squeaky-clean clients, he’s not immune to the ugliness that he encounters. From Fox21 and writer/director Jonathan Levine (“Warm Bodies”), along with Gina Matthews and Grant Scharbo (“Missing,” “13 Going on 30”) and Executive Producer Adam Fierro (“The Shield”), the series is set to film in Vancouver, Canada.

Hopes where high when FOX announced that it had picked up family comedy Surviving Jack as a mid-season show for the network. After only a handful of episodes, the network decided to cancel its freshman comedy. Almost instantly, fans created online petitions, videos and went to social media to express their anger over the cancellation of the show. One of the stars of Surviving Jack, Connor Buckley is also one of the thousands who is pushing for the show to get a second life.

Connor sat down with the Pop Culture Principle to talk about Surviving Jack, his thoughts on why the show was cancelled and what fans can do to help spread the word to bring Surviving Jack back.

Pop Culture Principle – For those who still haven’t seen Surviving Jack, can you tell us what the show is about?

Connor Buckley – Surviving Jack takes place in the 90s. I think it’s the first show of its kind that focuses on the 90s. It has all the great music and clothes from the 90s and it’s a really nice throwback to that time. The show centers on a family in San Diego. The father is an oncologist and the mother was formerly a stay at home mom, but now she is going to law school. So the father, Jack, is now in charge of parenting us and his style of parenting is a lot more act first, ask questions later; which is what a lot of the comedy centers around.

TBS Extends 'Conan' Through 2018

conan_obrien_wp

TBS and Conan O'Brien are continuing their partnership as the network has renewed the late-night series CONAN through 2018. Since it premiered in November 2010, CONAN has been a hit with TBS's core audience of young adults, scoring a younger median age than any other hour-long talk show in late night.

For the year-to-date, CONAN is averaging 862,000 viewers in Live + 7 delivery, with more adults 18-34 than such competitors as The Late Show with David Letterman, The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, The Arsenio Hall Show, Chelsea Lately and Watch What Happens: Live. The show garnered growth in Q1 2014, with adults 18-34 up by +12% and adults 18-49 increasing by +5% compared to Q4.

The CW Cancels 3 Shows And Supernatural Spinoff

The Tomorrow People

The CW dropped the ax this afternoon by cancelling four shows including one that barely was out of the gate.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the network has decided to cancel The Tomorrow People, Star Crossed and The Carries Diaries. They have also decided not to pick up the Supernatural spinoff Bloodlines as well.

Early on the Supernatural spinoff was considered likely for a series pickup, but after the backdoor pilot aired during the ninth season of Supernatural, it met with negative reaction from the fans and low ratings.

The other 3 series each suffered from low ratings and never really were able to find an audience.

FOX Cancels 'Dads', 'Surviving Jack' And 'Enlisted'

survivingjack

We guess you can say that FOX cleaned the comedy house today with three of its freshman comedies. According to Deadline, FOX has pulled the plug on Surviving Jack, Enlisted and Dads.

All three comedies struggled to find an audience and as recently as a week ago, there was talk that Dads might squeak by with a renewal.

FOX also decided to pass on comedy pilots for Fatrick, Dead Boss and No Place Like Home. That only leaves comedies Sober Companion and Cabot College in contention for a series pickup.

Eric West Replaces Columbus Short On 'Scandal'

Eric-West-500

It seems like the character of Harrison Wright on the hit ABC series Scandal will live on. According to Deadline, actor Eric West has closed a deal to continue the character of Harrison Wright on the series. In the season 3 finale of Scandal, Harrison had a gun pointed at him by B613 and we were left wondering was he shot or not.

“We are so lucky to have someone as talented, joyful and just plain remarkable as Eric,” ABC said in a statement.
