After the success of the first The X-files film and the continuing popularity of the television series years after it ended its initial run,  it was a no-brainer that the studio would want to do a second film. But, that being said, the second film was in development hell for several years before finally being made and getting released in 2008.

That film turned out to be The X-files: I Want To Believe, which ended up being more of a standalone horror/thriller than a film dealing with conspiracies and extraterrestrials. When it was released, the film received mixed and lukewarm reviews. The film that was released in 2008 wasn’t exactly the film Chris Carter wanted to release. He had a darker, scarier film in mind, but the studio had him cut many scenes from the film in order to garner a PG-13 rating.

Flash forward to 2026 and Carter now has the opportunity to release the film he intended to release way back in 2008. The Director’s Cut, The X-Files: I Want to Believe – Vrach Frankenshteyn, will be released on August 14th on Hulu.

We had the chance to sit down with Chris Carter and talk about the genesis of this version of the film, what his involvement, if any is with the upcoming Ryan Coogler reboot and his thoughts on some fans thinking this film could have easily been a MIllennium.

During our interview, we left out a few questions, but were able to get answers for said questions. We asked Carter about the running time of the director’s cut. The original film clocked in at 108 minutes, this new version of the film comes in a bit shorter at 103 minutes. We also asked about a future physical release of the director’s cut and were told that he wasn’t aware of any plans for a physical release. Check out the trailer and interview below!!
